Long Term Care Insurance (LTCi)
This insurance helps pay for services beyond medical care and nursing care used by people who because of old age, mental or physical illness, or injury, find themselves in need of help with eating, bathing, dressing, toileting or continence, and/or transferring (e.g., getting out of a chair or out of bed) or suffer cognitive impairment. Health insurance, and even Medicare, do not pay for this type of care. Some people who need these services might need them only for a few months or less. Statistically, 7% of women and 2% of men who are healthy enough to get LTCi will need it for more than 2 years.
Many people think this care is provided exclusively in a nursing home. It can be, but it can also be provided in an adult day care center, an assisted living facility, or at home and most polices today pay for all of these settings. In fact, most care of this type is provided in someone’s home. The typical family member care giver today has to work full time then spend an additional 21 hours per week providing direct care in addition to their own family activities. Surprisingly, most are male (60%). It is a noble but draining effort for the care givers. They will need help.
While costs vary widely by geographic area, the national averages are:
- $19 / hour for home health care
- $3,000 monthly for assisted living
- $5,583 monthly for full scale nursing home
If you don't have insurance, long term care can be expensive, depending upon the amount and type of care needed and the setting in which it is provided. LTCi provides funds to give you dignity and choices. Call us and let us help you maximize your options.

Short Term Health Insurance
Short term / temporary health insurance policies are for individuals who find themselves temporarily without health insurance, such as college students going from the family insurance policy to their own, people who find themselves between jobs or looking for an alternative to COBRA. It is vitally important to stay insured and not let any time lapse. If this were to happen, you could be termed “uninsurable” and find yourself without any health insurance, leaving you open to financial ruin if you or someone in your family became seriously ill.
These policies can be purchased to cover anywhere from 30 days to 12 months. They do not cover pre-existing conditions but provide a safety net for the unexpected medical claim. Why risk being uninsured? Short Term Medical Policies are very affordable.

Options for Medicare Eligibles
Medicare will not pay for all of your health care costs. There are costs you must pay such as co-insurance, co-pays and deductibles. There are also medical services for which traditional Medicare offers limited or no coverage such as retail prescription drugs, custodial care, home care and more. These “gaps” in original Medicare can leave you exposed to thousands of dollars in cost. Protect yourself from this financial burden by enrolling in a Medicare Supplement Policy, a Medicare Advantage Plan and/or a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan. These are offered by private insurance companies, usually for a fee in addition to what you are required to pay to have original Medicare. The options are numerous, and each year Medicare beneficiaries get an election period in which to choose their “gap” coverage for the coming year.
At Maxum Benefits we have the tools and knowledge to help you select the best options for your needs. A few of the many companies we represent are
AARP, BlueCross BlueShield Plans, CIGNA, CVS/Caremark Silver Scripts, HealthSpring, Humana, Mutual of Omaha, Secure Horizon, United Healthcare.
